Take a walk through history with Harvard Club member James Vaughn!

Kenilworth was once a town. It started with the Kenilworth Inn (https://www.kenilworthinnapartments.com/ ), and a colorful parade of characters trails through its history from its first mayor in 1891, indicted for bank fraud to its last mayor, Leah Chiles in 1929, the first woman elected mayor of a town in North Carolina history. Find out what Bela Bartok, Lulu McConnell, and one of the presidents of Paramount Pictures have to do with Kenilworth. Discover Edsel Ford's connection and how Kenilworth residents were the people who integrated Asheville schools. Discover the absurd and the inspirational in that little community tucked up behind Mission Hospital.

This tour will cover two miles of walking over mostly level ground. Wear comfortable walking clothes and shoes. Bring water if you like. Guests of members are welcome.

When: July 27, 10 a.m. sharp

Where to meet: The Kenilworth Center at 4 Chiles Ave, Asheville (Behind the Kenilworth Presbyterian Church)

Parking notes: Park at the meeting place.

Cost: FREE! (Donations to the Kenilworth Residents Association - a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization - are welcome but not required.)

James Vaughn provides tours of this historic neighborhood. He is the Kenilworth Archivist who secured several Kenilworth listings on the National Register of Historic Places. James serves on the Historic Resources Commission of Asheville and Buncombe County and received a Griffin Award for Historic Research from The Preservation Society of Asheville and Buncombe County.
